Big Finish ♥ New Who

Before playing the Doctor, David Tennant’s first Doctor Who-related work was with Big Finish, where he played Nazi officer Feldwebel Kurtz (Colditz), Burke and Hare victim Daft Jamie (Medicinal Purposes), UNIT colonel Brimmicombe-Wood (Sympathy for the Devil and The Wasting), an unnamed Time Lord (Exile), and Galanar, one of the main characters in the third series of Dalek Empire.

A number of New Who actors have also appeared in Big Finish’s Bernice Summerfield range, which focuses on the adventures of the former Seventh Doctor companion of the same name (played by Lisa Bowerman, who appeared in the final Classic Who story, “Survival,” and voiced Seruba Velak in the Tenth Doctor cartoon “Dreamland”). Some of the more recent guest stars include Ayesha Antoine (Dee Dee Blasco in “Midnight”) as Benny’s best friend Ruth, Anjli Mohindra (Rani Chandra) as Gabriella Dominicci in Brand Management, and Arthur Darvill (Rory Williams) as Dr. Jared Jones in Paradise Frost.

Actors who have appeared in both New Who and Big Finish audios include David Troughton (also a Classic Who alum, he played Professor Hobbes in “Midnight” and has had several Big Finish roles, including the Black Guardian in the Key 2 Time trilogy), Ian McNeice (Winston Churchill in the Eleventh Doctor’s era; he’s also acted for Big Finish opposite the Fourth and Eighth Doctors), and Daniel Anthony (Clyde Langer as well as Delong in the Eighth Doctor audio Wirrn Dawn).

Happy Birthday, David Troughton!

Bonus trivia: David, son of Patrick “Second Doctor” Troughton, also played a guard in The Enemy of the World (but it looks like the footage no longer exists). David and Colin “Sixth Doctor” Baker were flatmates for ten years, and Colin was the best man at David’s wedding.
